Right to Buy Mortgages

Buying your council property?

Under the Right to Buy scheme, you can buy your council property at a price lower than the full market value. This is because the length of time you have spent as a tenant entitles you to a discount.

One of the main criteria for being eligible for Right to Buy is that you must be a secure tenant for at least five years. This includes tenancies held with a housing association, other local councils or the armed forces. If you have held a 12 month Introductory Tenancy and it has been transferred to a secure tenancy, this period of time will contribute towards the five year tenancy requirement.

The secure tenancies can be held in any part of the country, provided they are with a local authority or recognised housing association, and need not be for two continuous years.
